Terms of adhesive

1. General terms

Adhesion
The state in which two surfaces rely on chemical force, physical force, or both.
Synonym: adhesion

Cohesion
The state in which particles within a single substance are combined by primary and secondary valence.

Mechanical adhesion
The bonding of the two surfaces through the bite of the adhesive.
Synonym: mechanical adhesion

Adhesive failure; adhesion failure
Visually visible damages occurring at the boundary between adhesive and adherend.

Cohesive failure; cohesion failure
Visually visible damage that occurs in the adhesive or adherend.

Compatibility
When two or more substances are mixed, they have the ability of mutual affinity.

Adhesive
A substance that can make adherends stick together by bonding.

Adherend adherend
Objects to be glued or objects on both sides of the glue layer after glued.

Substrate
The material used to apply adhesive to the surface.
Note: This is a broader term than "sticky object".

Wet wetting
The affinity of liquids to solids. The smaller the contact angle between the two, the easier the solid surface is wetted by the liquid.
Synonyms: wetting

Dry
The process of reducing the solvent or dispersion medium by evaporation and absorption to change the physical state of the adhesive on the adherend.

Glue bond
Use adhesive to connect the surface of the adherend.
Synonyms: bonding

Curing; curing
The process of obtaining and improving the performance of adhesive strength through chemical reaction (polymerization, cross-linking, etc.).

Hardening setting; set
Adhesives through chemical reaction or physical action (such as polymerization, oxidation, gelation, hydration, cooling, evaporation of volatile components, etc.), the process of obtaining and improving the performance of bonding strength, cohesive strength and so on.

Adhesive layer
Adhesive layer in adhesive parts.

Crosslinking crosslinking
The process of forming chemical bonds between molecules and creating a three-dimensional network structure.

Hierarchical delamination
In laminates, the separation of layers caused by the destruction of adhesives, adherends or their interfaces.

Spilled glue squeeze-out
After pressurizing the assembly, the adhesive is extruded from the adhesive layer.

Blocking
An undesirable adhesion phenomenon between materials.

Dry tack; aggressive tack
A characteristic of certain adhesives (especially non-vulcanized rubber adhesives). When the volatile components in the adhesive evaporate to the level of one chamber, in the case where the hand feels dry, they will stick to each other when they are in contact.

Glioma fillet
The part of the adhesive filled at the intersection of the two adherends (such as the rounded corner of the adhesive formed at the end of the core when the honeycomb core is bonded to the face material).

Degree of cure
The degree of chemical reaction characterized when the adhesive cures.

Aging
The phenomenon that the performance of adhesive parts changes with time.

Sticky tack
After the adhesive is in contact with the adherend, a slight pressure is applied immediately to form a property of considerable bonding strength.

Binder
Substances in the adhesive formulation that mainly play a role in binding.

Curing agent; hardening agent; hardener
A substance that directly participates in a chemical reaction to cure an adhesive.

Latent curing agent
A curing agent that is chemically inert under normal conditions and functions under specific conditions.

Blocked curing agent
A curing agent or hardener that temporarily loses chemical activity can be reactivated by physical or chemical methods as required.

Accelerator accelerator; promoter
Substances that promote chemical reactions, shorten curing time, and lower curing temperature in formulations.

Diluent
Liquid substances used to reduce the viscosity of adhesives and the concentration of solid components.

Reactive diluent
A diluent that contains active groups in the molecule and can participate in the curing reaction.

Dispersing agent
A substance that disperses the adhesive component in the medium.

Filler
A non-adhesive solid substance added to improve the performance of adhesives or reduce costs.

Modifier; modifying agent
Ingredients added to the adhesive formulation to deliver its properties. Such as fillers, toughening agents and other substances.

Stabilizer
Substances that help the adhesive maintain its stability during formulation, storage, and use.

Tackifier
Substance that can increase the viscosity of the film or extend the viscosity range of the adhesive.

Thickener
Substances added to increase the apparent viscosity of the adhesive.

Flexibilizer
A substance that improves the brittleness and toughness of the adhesive in the formulation.

Catalyst
A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction and theoretically keeps its chemical properties unchanged at the end of the melon.

Extender
There is a little adhesive effect, but the substance added to the adhesive mainly plays a role in reducing costs.

Inhibitor; retarder
A substance that inhibits chemical reactions and is used in certain types of adhesives to extend its shelf life or pot life.

Release paper
Protective paper for film and tape. Before use, it can be easily removed from the film or tape.

3. Classification noun

Natural glue
Adhesive made of animal and plant polymer compounds as raw materials.

Animal glue
Adhesive made of animal skin, bone, tendon, blood, etc. Such as bone glue, gelatin, blood protein, etc.

Vegetable glue
Adhesive made of starch, vegetable protein and other plant ingredients as adhesive. Such as starch adhesive, protein adhesive, gum and so on.

Organic adhesive
Adhesive made with organic compound as adhesive.

Resin adhesive
Adhesive made of natural resin (such as gelatin, rosin) or synthetic resin (such as phenolic, epoxy, polyacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, etc.) as the adhesive.

Rubber adhesive
Adhesive made of natural rubber or synthetic rubber (such as nitrile rubber, neoprene rubber, silicone rubber, etc.) as an adhesive.

Viscose adhesive
Adhesive made with viscose (such as cellulose sodium xanthate) as adhesive.

Cellulose adhesive
Adhesive made with cellulose derivatives as adhesive.

Inorganic adhesive
Adhesive made with inorganic compound as adhesive. Such as silicate, phosphorus right salt and alkaline salts, chloride, nitride and so on.

Ceramic adhesive
Adhesives with inorganic compounds (such as metal oxides, etc.) as the adhesive and ceramic structure after curing.

Glass adhesive
Inorganic adhesives with oxides (such as silicon oxide, sodium oxide, lead oxide, etc.) as adhesive materials, which are adhered by hot melt and have glass composition and performance.

Film adhesive
The film adhesive with or without carrier, which is usually hardened by heating and pressing, is usually used.
Synonyms: film

Sticky adhesive stick; adhesive stick
It is made of resin and other adhesives that are stick-shaped at room temperature without solvents.
Synonym: glue stick

Powder adhesive
It is made of resin and other adhesives that are in powder form at room temperature without solvents.

Paste adhesive
Adhesive in the form of paste.

Mastic adhesive
A non-flowing adhesive that can be molded at room temperature. It is used to seal wider gaps.

Adhesive tape
Banded products coated with glue on one or both sides of substrates such as paper, cloth, film, and metal foil.

Structural adhesive
Adhesive used for bonding structural components, which can withstand long-term allowable stress and environmental effects.

Primer
In order to improve the bonding performance, an adhesive is coated on the surface of the adherend before coating.

Solvent adhesive
Adhesives containing volatile organic solvents. It does not include water-based adhesives.

Solvent-activated adhesive
Before use, activate the dry adhesive film with a solvent to make it sticky and complete the adhesive.

Solventless adhesive
Solvent-free liquid, paste, and solid adhesives.

Sealing adhesive
Adhesive for sealing.

Anaerobic adhesive
Adhesive that inhibits curing when oxygen is present and cures by itself when oxygen is isolated

Photosensitive adhesive
Adhesives that rely on light to initiate curing.

Pressure-sensitive adhesive
A viscoelastic material with long-lasting viscosity when present in a solvent-free state. The material can be instantly bonded to most solid surfaces with slight pressure.

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape
Apply the pressure-sensitive adhesive to the tape-shaped article on the substrate.

Multiple layer adhesive
Films composed of different adhesives on both sides, usually with a carrier. It is generally used for the bonding of the core material and the panel in the honeycomb sandwich structure.

Foaming adhesive
The foam expands in situ during curing and reduces the apparent density of the adhesive by a large number of gas cells dispersed throughout the adhesive layer.

Foamed adhesive; cellula adhesive
Adhesives that already contain countless gas-filled microbubbles, which significantly reduce the surface density.

Encapsulated adhesive
The particles or droplets of reactive components are encapsulated in a protective film (microcapsule), which can prevent curing of the adhesive before the protective film is destroyed by an appropriate method.

Electric conductive adhesive
Adhesive with conductive properties. This adhesive generally contains conductive powders such as silver, copper, and graphite.

Heat activated adhesive
A dry adhesive that makes it sticky by heating.

Hot-melt adhesive
It is a kind of adhesive that is coated under melting and cooled to a solid state to complete bonding.

Contact adhesive
Coated on the surface of two adherends, dried and laminated together, without maintaining pressure to form an adhesive with adhesive strength.

Water-borne adhesive; aqueous adhesive
Adhesive with water as solvent or dispersion medium.

Water-resistant adhesive
Adhesives that are often exposed to moisture and moisture and still maintain their adhesive properties (or performance).

Hot-setting adhesive
An adhesive that requires heating to harden.
