Down-blowing water-cooled process produces high yield and high transparency film

The Braunton Company (BE) in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, has sold two AquaFrost down-blowing water-cooled production lines to European blown film manufacturers. This was the company's president, RL Bud Smith, who was publicly available to the public not long ago. "After nine months of extensive customer trials, we got a nine-storey and a 10-story order from European customers," Smith said.

Through the use of water as a cooling medium, AquaFrost can increase production, producing films with high transparency, balanced stretching and deep drawing thermoforming properties. The BE introduced the principle of the AquaFrost production line in K2001. Smith said, “From then on, through the continuous improvement and improvement of our equipment and technology through the testing of our 5-layer AquaFrost product line and our customer's 9-tier beta system at our Blown Film Technology Center, we are deeply aware of the benefits and potential of the system. Through field trials we can prove to our customers that our technologies and products can benefit our customers."

The customer is concerned that AquaFrost can produce films with good transparency and very soft, and consider replacing the cast film line with this high-yield production line. Smith said, “We expect the sales of the AquaFrost line will be even better soon. This technology is a major contribution to the blown film market. When competitors see this film, they will realize that they must use AquaFrost to produce. High transparency, high yield film.” In addition to its high transparency and high output, AquaFrost is also more economical, compared to the cast line, where AquaFrost is performing both trimming and width changes. There is less waste.


BE's technical director Bill Wybenga said, “The AquaFrost system uses all the components of the customer's expected Brampton Engineering company. The core of the system is our SCD (streamline co-extrusion die).

The AquaFrost line, die and extruder are located at the top of the tower. Bubbles are blown down through an AquaRing. This helps to quickly cool the molten polymer to increase throughput and film transparency. The bubble passes through a reversed herringbone splint and rotary traction device. The system also uses BE's I-Flex movable lip to ensure precise thickness control.
