New method developed in the Netherlands to develop new isocyanate type low temperature curing agent

In July 2003, the TNO Industrial Research Institute in the Netherlands developed the use of UV radiation to activate conventional polymeric and monomeric materials to accommodate further reaction with the second component of the mixture. The most attractive results of this system are:
The ketoxime blocked isocyanate is combined with an aliphatic epoxy resin. Upon UV irradiation at about 100[deg.] C., this blocked isocyanate group is deblocked and converted into a functional group that reacts with epoxy groups.
The mixture is stable below about 100°C, but cross-linking occurs within a few minutes when irradiated with UV light at this temperature. This system can be used not only for powder coatings, but also for powder coatings, as well as for waterborne and solventborne coatings.
