New Zealand scientists use 3D printed honeycombs to increase honey production

The reason why bees are called the most efficient 3D printers is because they can build a strong, degradable honeycomb structure by extruding chemicals from their bodies, which is currently used in fused deposition (FDM) 3D printers. It is the same principle. However, the bee “3D printing” hive is only for the production and storage of honey, so after thinking about this, a team of scientists at the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand came up with an interesting way to increase honey production – providing 3D printing for bees. honeycomb.


This method works because the artificial hive saves the bees from building their own hive, so they have more time and energy to collect honey, and the beekeeper will harvest more honey. “Bees produce honey, the energy cost of making a hive is much higher than that of honey,” said beekeeper expert Richard Evatt. “In addition, since honey is the main food for bees, they usually eat honey before harvesting. Lost a lot."


According to China's 3D printer network, in practice, the work of scientists is very simple, that is, 3D prints a copy of the existing honeycomb, and then install it into the hive. However, they also encountered the challenge of getting a hive with just the right size.


To achieve this, the research team used a professional software. “It not only analyzes the sound inside the beehive, but also creates the same 3D structure at the same time,” explains designer Gerbrand van Melle.

It's worth mentioning that although the bees were previously called “the most efficient 3D printers”, they are much slower than real 3D printers – making a single 3D printer for the same size of the honeycomb structure In one day, it takes 60,000 bees for 1 week.
