Making of ICC Profile file in digital proofing

The advantage of the digital proofing system is that it adopts color management technology, high-end color inkjet printing technology, and uses ICC color management professional digital proofing software and precision spectrophotometer to accurately calculate the color space. Realize the color conversion of different color spaces and achieve the consistency of digital proofing and printing proofing.

One of the most important steps in implementing the color management process is the production of ICC-compliant device color characteristic files. Here we introduce the production method of digital proofing characteristic file based on ICC standard.

1. Establish an ICC Profile that reflects printability

It is particularly important to establish an ICC profile that reflects printability, because standardized and standardized printing conditions are the basis for color management, and printing ICC Profile files that reflect standards and specifications is also a basic condition for digital proofing. Therefore, color for digital proofing is required Management must first establish a standardized printing state, and the ICC profile file generated on this basis can accurately reflect the ability of the equipment and printed materials to express colors. The digital proofs produced in this way are really practical in actual production.

The operation steps of printing standardization and standardization are as follows.

1. Make a set of digital proofing test version (see Figure 1). This test version includes the determination of printing quality indicators (such as field density, K value, and dot expansion, etc.) and the ECI2002 color scale.
2. The film output from the imagesetter must meet the quality standards of the output film. Film output requires that the error of each point is ± 1%, the maximum density is ≥4.0, and the output dot curve is straight.
3. The printing plate reaches the best quality standard of printing plate. 3% -98% of the outlets appeared.
4. Using Heidelberg CD102 printing, strictly control the printing process conditions. The printing process parameters are shown in Table 1.
5. Use the software Profile maker and eye-one spectrophotometer to test the L * a * b * value of each color block of ECI2002, and generate an ICC profile file reflecting the printability. Because the color standard ECI2002 provided by printing compares with standards and specifications, it lays a foundation for digital proofing to accurately simulate the printing color.

Second, establish an ICC Profile that reflects printability

The quality of digital proofing is closely related to printing software, printers, ink and paper. To establish the ICC profile of the printer, it must be the best match. In general, choose special digital proofing paper and matching ink.

1. Experimental conditions Hardware configuration â‘  EPSON STYLUS 10600 color inkjet printer.
â‘¡ One EYE-ONE spectrophotometer.
Software composition â‘  Founder smooth color management software, and profile maker5.0 software that generates ICC files.
â‘¡Windows XP operating system software.
Printing materials â‘  Paper: EPSON digital proofing paper, 60mm roll paper.
â‘¡ Ink: EPSON's original six-color ink.

2. Experimental method To establish an ICC profile that reflects printability, first of all, the basic linearization of the printer must be established, which determines the physical characteristics of the paper and ink, and optimizes the total inkjet and single-channel ink of the printer. That is, the smallest possible ink volume is used to obtain the largest possible color density, which provides the basis and optimized characteristics for the creation of printer paper ICC profile files, thereby establishing the foundation of color management. Take Fangzheng Changliu as an example, that is, to directly print the four-color gray scale ruler and test it with a spectrophotometer to directly generate the basic linearity of the printer. Next, the total ink volume is printed, and the total ink volume of the printer is determined from the printed proofs.

After the basic linearization is done, first print out the ECI2002 color scale, and test the L * a * b * of the color block with a spectrophotometer, and then generate a printable ICC Profile file through the profile maker software.

3. Establish an ICC Profile file that reflects the proofing

Earlier we have obtained an ICC Profile file reflecting the characteristics of the printing process and an ICC Profile file reflecting the characteristics of the color printer. Put these two files into Founder Changli (as shown in Figure 2), use the color management module (CMM) in Changli to match the files, and make the digital proofing simulate the color gamut of printing. However, only one color space conversion cannot achieve accurate color conversion. It is necessary to modify and edit the ICC file of the printer multiple times according to the actual situation. The dot increase rate, gray balance data, UCR and GCR parameters of the ICC file can be modified. The total amount of ink, etc., can also be adjusted separately for the yellow, magenta, cyan, and black four-color curves, and finally the printed sheets are consistent with the printed matter, and the ICC Profile file that reflects the effect is established. 4. Conclusion

Through practice, we can know that in order to make the digital proofing consistent with the printed matter, we have the following points:

1. When providing color-coded ECI2002 printing samples, the state of the printing machine is as stable as possible during the entire printing process, so as to ensure that the printed matter can match the effect of proofing.
2. The printed materials should be stable. After changing the paper and ink materials, it is necessary to re-create the ICC Profile that reflects the performance of the printing press. The paper and ink used by the printer should also be stable. Once a condition changes, the printer's ICC Profile file must be re-created.
3. The characteristic files of the printing machine need to produce a series of characteristic files with different black plate generation volume to adapt to the use of different image types.
4. The digital proofing ICC profile file is not a one-time job. In order to ensure the consistency of the simulation effect, a new ICC file with a slight adjustment of the black version curve is generally done every 3 to 6 months.
